How do you build fluency with the multiplication table while ensuring that a lack of fluency with multiplication facts doesn't hold students back from accessing grade level content?
There are a couple of great go to resources I love for building fact fluency. The first is Christina Tondevold aka the Recovering Traditionalist. She has free videos and resources for building conceptual understanding.
The second is Graham Fletcher and his work with Tondevold and building fact fluency.
There is such a stigma around “memorization”. These two are amazing to help change that mindset!!
The 2nd through 5th grade teachers use this resource - XtraMath is a free program that helps students master addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. With just 10 minutes a day you will see growth in math fluency! My own son wanted to do this at home and loved getting the next certificate.
Our school has purchased Reflex Math which is a program that focuses on the basic facts. The students enjoy it and it keeps track of their proficiency.
You can give each student a multiplication chart. As they learn their facts, they can cover up the answers in each row with a fun piece of washi tape, small stickers over each square, etc., so that having them covered becomes a fun thing, while still providing access to the ones they are still practicing.
